Bhutan has partnered with Binance Pay to allow travellers to pay for everything from flights to fruit using more than 100 digital currencies.

Positioning itself as a global pioneer in travel fintech, Bhutan has become the first nation worldwide to implement a national-level cryptocurrency payment system for tourism.

The move, which allows visitors to conduct entirely cashless journeys using digital currencies, was developed in partnership with Binance Pay and Bhutan's fully digital DK Bank.

It enables travellers with Binance accounts to pay for virtually every aspect of their trip using over 100 cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, BNB and USDC.

More than 100 merchants across the country, including those in remote areas, now accept crypto payments through QR codes. This covers everything from airline tickets and tourist visas to accommodation, tour guides, monument entry fees and purchases from roadside fruit vendors.

The system addresses common digital payment barriers by offering low transaction fees with zero gas fees and prompt settlements, alongside real-time notifications for transparency.

"We are excited to partner with Bhutan as we not only advance the use of cryptocurrencies in travel but also set a precedent for how technology can bridge cultures and economies," says Richard Teng, CEO of Binance. "This initiative exemplifies our commitment to innovation and our belief in a future where digital finance empowers global connectivity and enriches travel experiences."

Known as the "Kingdom of Happiness," Bhutan operates a high-value, low-volume tourism strategy. The cryptocurrency system aligns with Bhutan's philosophy of Gross National Happiness (GNH), which prioritises sustainability, cultural preservation, and societal well-being over GDP.

Teng adds: "This is more than a payment solution — it's a commitment to innovation, inclusion, and convenience. It enables a seamless experience for travellers and empowers even small vendors in remote villages to participate in the tourism economy."

In addition, all visitors to Bhutan must pay a Sustainable Development Fee of US$100 per person per night, which funds cultural, environmental, health and educational projects across the country.
